Biographical Snapshot
Bishop Kwame Lawson Adjei was elected the 68th Bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church on June 29, 2022, winning on the first ballot in Cincinnati, Ohio. A native of Likpe-Bakua in the Oti Region of Ghana, he is the second indigenous African bishop elected in the history of the church and currently serves as the Presiding Prelate of the Eleventh Episcopal District.
Current Roles & Leadership
Presiding Prelate: Eleventh Episcopal District (covering East African missions).
Community Leadership: Chairman of the Land Lords Association of Israel South in Accra; honored by the local government with the naming of “Lawson Street” in front of Bethel CME Church.
Educational Founder: Established the LL Reddick School of Theology & Leadership Studies in Ghana to train ministers and leaders.
Ecclesiastical Career
Mission Pioneer: Assigned in 1993 to start a mission in Accra, which grew into the Bethel CME Church, now a prominent congregation with its own property.
Regional Oversight: Served as Presiding Elder of the North West District and was later appointed Mission Supervisor for the Ghana-Togo region.
Educational Advocacy: Served for 31 years as the Chaplain of the Christian Methodist Senior High School without a stipend to strengthen the church’s relationship with the Ghana Education Service.
Judicial Service: Elected to the Judicial Council of the CME Church in 2010 and re-elected in 2018.
Education & Academic Background
Undergraduate Degrees: Post-Secondary Diploma in Theology and B.A. in Ministry (Maranatha University College, Accra).
Master of Divinity: Successful Ministers Academy in collaboration with London Theological Accrediting Agency.
Doctorate of Theology: American Bible University, Ghana Campus.
Ecumenical Roles: Former Vice Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana and delegate to the World Methodist Council (2001 and 2016).
Historical Service & Contributions
Itinerant Ministry: Climbed every level of the hierarchy, from Licensed Local Preacher to Young Adult Council President.
International Speaker: A respected orator who has preached across West Africa, Europe, and the United States at major congregations such as Metropolitan CME (Houston) and Trinity CME (Memphis).
Honors: Recipient of the ITC Distinguished Award for Ministry (2007) and served as the Parade Grand Marshall for Lane College (2015).
Personal Life
Born on November 23, 1963, to Lawrence Kwame Adjei and Christine Nubuasah, he is the third of twelve children. Bishop Adjei has been married to Rev. Mrs. Mercy Adjei since 1998. They are blessed with three children: Justina, Mary, and Emmanuel.
