The mission of the Office of Research at Benedict College is to promote and facilitate research, education, and outreach programs through acquisition of external grants.

To encourage faculty, staff, and students to engage in research and scholarly activities, to strengthen their knowledge in their respective disciplines
To provide leadership and assistance in all areas of external grant funding and research support, by working with faculty and staff in the acquisition and administration of grant activities from pre-award planning and submission phase, through post-award processing and reporting stages.

To provide institutional oversight and compliance for all research programs, management of internal and external awards, faculty and student research within the core disciplines and across disciplinary teams.

General functions of the Office of Research include:
▪Coordination of proposal development, submission and pre-award activities
▪Providing oversight on regulatory and compliance issues related to research program activity
▪Providing faculty development in grantsmanship and research capacity building
▪Liaison with funding agencies, institutional Accounting Office or other offices to support research and related program activities
▪Build collaboration with other academic institutions, governmental and non-governmental agencies to strengthen faculty research.

Specifically, the Office of Research:
▪Review proposals for consistency with the college’s mission and policies
▪Ensure that all special arrangements as specified in the proposal are met, i.e., additional space, facilities and/or services
▪Developing budgets within agency and institutional guidelines
▪Grant reporting and documentation for Grants Accounting
▪Work with faculty on implementation of grants and contracts consistent with the stated objectives and institutional mission.

Lincoln University of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was founded in 1854 and holds the distinction as the first degree-granting Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the United States. Lincoln was chartered as Ashmun Institute in honor of the first governor of Liberia, Jehudi Ashmun. In 1866, the Institute was renamed Lincoln University. As a premier liberal arts university, Lincoln has focused on its commitment to educate and empower students to become leaders in their communities and indeed across the globe after acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in life. Some of the distinguished graduates include Horace Mann Bond, first African American President of Lincoln University; Thurgood Marshall, first African American U.S. Supreme Court Justice; Langston Hughes, poet/playwright; Nnamdi Azikiwe, first President of Nigeria; Kwame Nkrumah, first President of Ghana; and Roy C. Nichols, first African American Bishop of United Methodist Church. In 1884, Lincoln became the first college or university to publish an alumni magazine. Lincoln’s campus is located on a 433-acre plot of land in rural southern Chester County, PA. It also operates a location in Philadelphia. Lincoln is governed by a Board of Trustees of 39 voting members, with 3 ex-officio members (Governor, Secretary of Education and Lincoln’s President).

The MIRO cSETR vision is to establish a sustainable minority university center of excellence in advanced propulsion research through strategic partnerships and to educate a diverse future aerospace workforce. ▪The Gold LEED certified, Science and Technology Center (STC), which houses science related disciplines including natural sciences, biology, physics, chemistry, general sciences, and environmental sciences, preparing students to enter professional schools in dentistry, pharmacy, and medicine or to pursue careers in industries of science and technology. STC also includes academic and research space to support mathematics and computer science programs.
▪The Center for Organic Synthesis conducts research on synthesis of small bio-organic molecules that can be used for clinical diagnosis (bio markers) and understand the pathogenic mechanisms underlying the clinical manifestations of diseases.
▪Center for Nanotechnology conducts research on synthesis of metal complexes, quantum dots and nanoparticles, Dye sensitized and multijunction solar cell in the areas of nanoscience, laser photochemistry, electro-chemistry and PV energy.
▪Health and Human Services Building (HHSB) houses six Health Assessment Simulation Laboratories. Each simulation laboratory is fully equipped with various operational equipment and high-fidelity (a terminology in nursing that means the electronic reproduction of sound and physiology action) manikins that allow the environment to be a realistic depiction of a real hospital. Two medical surgical lab high-fidelity simulators, two high-fidelity pediatrics/obstetrics simulators, and two high-fidelity advanced medical surgical simulators. Within HHSB, the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, which includes Psychology, Counseling and Behavioral Health, Criminal Justice, Applied Social and Political Sciences, and Social Work also has independent living labs, a forensics laboratory, and moot courtroom.
▪The Center for Strategic Entrepreneurship in the The College of Business is slated to occupy a newly renovated space in 2023 and develops innovative, sustainable entrepreneurship models and sector-specific solutions to 21st Century challenges in learning competencies, relational competencies, workforce infusion, and loss of trans-regional industrial networks. engineering career pathways to minorities who are historically underrepresented in STEM.
Department of Commerce, which includes a two-year grant to expand access to broadband to
minority communities of Madison County, Alabama.

Frontiers Research Program
Drake State is proud to have been selected by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center to collaborate in the Moon-to-Mars Planetary Autonomous Construction Technology program. Drake State is the first community college and only historically Black community college to receive a cooperative agreement award from Marshall’s CAN opportunity.

After receiving the CAN in September 2020, Drake State established the Frontiers Research Program, which houses and manages all aspects of the related research and curriculum development. An advisory board including technical experts, NASA officials and community leaders was also created to provide technical expertise and support to the Frontiers team.

Faculty and student interns from Drake State’s Advanced Manufacturing Division make up the Frontiers team. Their work is twofold: test materials and processes used in 3D printing technology to help develop construction techniques suitable for building landing pads, roads, and other large structures on Earth and in space, and to develop curriculum for training a new workforce of technicians specialized in 3D construction techniques.

The research project was funded through NASA’s Minority University Research and Education Project (MUREP). Students must be 16 years old and enrolled at Drake State in the Advanced Manufacturing program to be eligible for student internships through the Frontiers Research Program. The first cohort of two student interns completed the program in May 2021, and the second cohort began in the Fall 2021 semester.

Mission Statement
The Downs-Jones Library is the primary location for doing research at Huston-Tillotson University. With its rich history, the library serves as the center for a wide variety of resources such as books, periodicals, media, electronic databases, and eBooks.

The mission of the Library is to support the curricular offerings of the University by providing materials that supplement the instructional program and meet the needs of the entire University. This is done through the implementation of the following objectives:

To acquire, organize, and make accessible a dynamic and growing collection of materials, including background and transitional works for both the lower division and the upper division.

To provide adequate physical facilities and equipment for maximum use of available resources.

To adapt to changes in modes of classroom instruction by acquiring and/or producing materials in various formats of print and non-print media.

To encourage students to read beyond source assignment for their own enlightenment, enjoyment, and satisfaction, thereby developing skills and habits for lifelong learning.

To support, in part, research by faculty and administrators by acquiring, each year, selected basic and current works for that purpose.

Huston-Tillotson University awards undergraduates four-year degrees in business, education, the humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, science, and technology. A multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, and multi-faith institution, the University welcomes students of all ages, faces, and religions.

Graduates of career and technical programs are prepared for immediate employment in their field of study. Capability Statement
Gadsden State Community College (GSCC) is a public two-year institution which reports to the
Alabama Community College System (ACCS). The governing board is the ACCS Board of Trustees.
GSCC has a President and an Executive Leadership team consisting of: the Dean of Financial and
Administrative Services, the Dean of Academic Programs and Services, the Dean of Technical
Education and Workforce Development, Chief Information Officer, Associate Dean of Institutional
Advancement and Community Services, Dean of Health Sciences, and the Dean of Enrollment and
Retention.

GSCC has six campuses serving Calhoun, Cleburne, Cherokee and Etowah Counties in

Established through the Division of Cancer Research and Training in 2009 through a grant from the National Institute of Health. ▪Accelerating Excellence in Translational Science
The Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science proposes to continue the enhancement and success of the Accelerating Excellence in Translational Science (AXIS) Center. AXIS has shown to be the integrated hub for research conducted at CDU and continues to provide experienced leadership, and a myriad of clinical, translational, and community partnered activities.  

▪Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI)
UCLA Clinical and Translational Science Institute is a dynamic partnership of four institutions: Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and the UCLA-Westwood Medical Center. Its mission is to bring UCLA innovations to bear on the greatest health needs of Los Angeles and the nation. 

▪Center for Biomedical Informatics
The Center for Biomedical Informatics at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) was established in 2007 to strengthen CDU’s research, educational, and service capacity in the area of biomedical informatics.  Biomedical Informatics is a multi-disciplinary field that studies how biomedical data, information, and knowledge can be acquired, stored, communicated, and transformed to produce insights that improve human health. A goal of the Center is to reduce health disparities by providing informatics solutions to problems that affect medically underserved and under-resourced communities. Faculty members at the Center have backgrounds in computer science, clinical medicine, sociology, and public health. 

▪Urban Health Institute
UHI supports the CDU’s research infrastructure in its efforts to address pressing health issues and disparities in minority populations. We do this by providing support to the CDU research faculty and community. 

▪Black Maternal Health Center of Excellence
The goal of BMHCE is to improve birth outcomes for Black birthing people in Los Angeles County, and address the structural racism, specifically anti-black racism, at the root of the birth disparities gap through Innovation, Research and Training. BMHCE brings a maternal health center in partnership with Black and POC community midwives to the resources of the Activated Village model and houses them both in an academic home.  

▪UCLA-CDU CFAR
The Mission of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)-Charles Drew University (CDU) CFAR is to stop HIV in Los Angeles County and beyond through engaging diverse researchers with multidisciplinary perspectives. The UCLA-CDU CFAR will strengthen and amplify the impact of existing research activities and launch new partnerships across Los Angeles and globally through our focus on three themes:  

We will STOP HIV by:
▪Preventing new HIV infections (Prevention).
▪reducing morbidity among people living with HIV (Treatment).
▪Developing strategies for eradication (ART-free Remission).
